I enjoyed reading the book, especially the first half when the mysteries were being built up.
I have a few issues though. It is not hard to guess the murderer. This person really sticks out.
The excitement kind of wean out in the second half. The author seems to give too much tedious details to the evidence, making it less intersting to follow.
This was a fairly entertaining read. The story had many of the flaws that most mysteries and thrillers have - places where you wonder why someone did something the way he did. However, it's entertaining and what I call a cozy mystery (no blood & gore, no foul language, etc.) and that's the kind of mystery book I prefer to read. The sideline story about the Nihilists is a little silly. I did figure out early on "whodunit", but it still was fun to read.
A very nice read. Not a big, juicy read like Dashiell Hammett, but very entertaining. Good characters, entertaining plot, and a well described setting made it very entertaining. It was written in the early 1900, 1915 or so, and it reflects that time in the choice of words and grammar. A bit stilted but readable. And the vocabulary seems better than in use in books written today. The plot has enough twists and turns to keep you entertained if not guessing who did the foul deed. Definitely worth a look.
Great story and mystery . Holds one's interest to the end. The characters, sceneries, weather described so very well. Makes one feel totally immersed. Loved the methodical detective. If you like mystery novels then you will enjoy this book. Writing style fantastic. It has mystery, love, sorrow and family members complications all rolled out in one book. All those mystery lovers, do read this book.
This is a mystery set in England and Scotland apparently in the early part of the last century. A child is brought up in a modest household in England and it is only at the time of her mother's death that she finds out that they were not her real parents. A rich nobleman (of course) requests that she visit his estates with the promise that he will be able to find out her lineage with her help and the help of a detective named Gimblet. If you can get over the premise of the story, it does become a good mystery. There is a castle, Scottish countryside, hidden passages, secret messages, murder and all kinds of twists and turns. One caution the author sometimes seems to dwell a little on parts of the story where she wants to leave a clue. There is a little slow down about a quarter of the way into the story, but once you get past that the novel flows quite interestingly. Since I can't rate it 3 and a half stars, I thought that is was closer to 4 stars than just 3. It is an enjoyable murder mystery and worth the while to pick up.
Reads easily, not too wordy, with a lot of humour.
An ordinary young girl is invited to visit a castle in Scotland in the hope of learning about her parents, while the chocolate-loving detective Gimblet is hired to safeguard the Lord of the castle's affairs. Then a murder forces the detective to hightail it to the Highlands to figure out the meaning of a mysterious message, the true identities of the castle visitors, and of course the true murderer.
The detective is intelligent but not pompous, and shares enough of his reasoning and clues for the reader to guess at the murderer if they like; the heroine is young but decently dosed with both adventurous spirit and practical-mindedness.
I would read more by this author.
In fact, I'm writing this review while only half-way through the book. I'm so taken by it, I decided to look for more books by the same author, as this appeared to be part of a series of books featuring a detective named Gimblet. There seems to be at least one more Gimblet book, Mrs. Vanderstein's Jewels, and one supernatural/ghost story, The Long Spoon. She also wrote children's books, one of which is Nancy in the Wood. She also wrote The Yellow Kylin, which may be either a novel or short story.

The most fascinating thing I learned, though, is that she was the mother of Ivar Bryce, Ian Fleming's best friend. In fact, it's thought that Ivar Bryce came up with the name James Bond for Fleming's protagonist. One has to wonder if Ian Fleming read her books and gained inspiration from them.

As for this particular book, it involves a young woman of mysterious parentage, an elderly gentleman who is trying to figure out if she is his daughter, a hunting party at at Scottish castle, a murder, and a secret society. It would help going in to know that the Nihilists referred to in the book were a Russian anarchist group which was active beginning in the late 1800's, rather than a group of existential philosophers. (I had to look this up on Wikipedia, as I couldn't figure out why the nihilists I was familiar with would even form a group, much less a politically active one. If nothing really exists or matters, why bother?)

I highly recommend the book, and hope that more of Mrs. Bryce's books will turn up in ebook form.
